2095870 9208613 PCTABS00013 An L-sealer (10) for sealing thermoplastic films (20) has upper and lower seal bars (38, 48). The upper bar (38) has a protruding seal bed (92) mounted on it by springs (88). The lower bar (48) has a sealing element (116) mounted on a segmented sealing assembly (98) and recessed into the lower bar (48), with a pneumatic lifter (108) underneath the sealing assembly (98). In operation, the upper seal bar (38) descends onto the lower seal bar (48) and the two seal bars are locked together with film to be sealed between them. The pneumatic lifter (108) then inflates, lifting the sealing assembly (98), which contours to any warpage or misalignment of the seal bars (38, 48), pressing the sealing element (116) against the seal bed (92) and pushing the latter back into the upper seal bar (38). After sealing takes place through heat and pressure, the pneumatic lifter (108) deflates, lowering the sealing element (116) and allowing the seal bed (92) to return to its original position through the force of the underlying springs (88). The seal bars (38, 48) are unlocked, and the upper seal (38) bar returns to its original position.
