In applying heating on a pipe or other elongate tubular article, a heat shield is applied on the article at each side of a zone to which the heating is to be applied. Each heat shield has a wholly or partially cylindrical portion extending in a circumferential direction of the article, and a planar portion that extends radially outwardly from an inner end of the cylindrical portion.
