A head (10) for use in a heat staking machine utilizes an infrared heat lamp (40) and reflectors (38, 48) to di-rect radiant energy onto a plastic stud (16) to heat and so soften it prior to the staking punch (42) impacting the stud. The lamp (40) is disposed within a parabolic primary reflector (38) which directs the lamp's output toward a secondary reflector (48). The secondary reflector is concave and has a central aperture at its vertex through which the stud (16) projects such that all of the radiant energy emitted by the lamp (40) is focused radially in-ward onto the stud. The punch (42) is slidably mounted to the primary reflector (38) for reciprocal movement along the axes of the reflectors, and is extended to impact the stud.
