ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A heat transfer device particularly adapted for use in a flue of a natural draft storage type water heater is disclosed. The heat transfer device is comprised of a cylindrical baffle adapted to be discposed in the flue, which baffle includes a spiral external vane. The heat transfer device is particularly effective in conjunction with a reducing throat at the exit end of the flue, which throat serves to maintain the flue gas velocity of the gases leaving the flue. The throat will also ensure longevity of the bulkhead weld normally subjected to thermal and corrosive deterioration. The device is particularly useful in water heater flues with internal diameters greater than 4 inches.
