-29- ABSTRACT This invention is directed to a method for controlling the overall heat transfer coefficient of a heat transfer fluid. The method is characterized by (A) providing (1) a surfactant compound having a hydrophobic moiety chemically bonded to an ionic, hydrophilic moiety and (2) an amount of an electrolyte having a moiety that is capable of associating with the surfactant ion to form a viscoelastic surfactant, wherein said surfactant compound and said amount of electrolyte provide the desired heat transfer fluid; (B) preparing a viscoelastic surfactant composition by admixing (1) and (2) of step (A); and (C) incorporating into the heat transfer fluid the viscoelastic surfactant composition prepared in step (B) in an amount sufficient to reduce the amount of friction experienced by the heat transfer fluid in a heat transfer apparatus.
