ABSTRACT A new method is disclosed for sterilizing or heat treating liposomes. The liposomes may be empty or contain a bioactive agent; such liposomes may be administered in any pharmaceutically acceptable fashion such as parenterally or topically. The method involves subjecting liposomes to heating at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient time to achieve sterilization.
