2119911 9307301 PCTABS00021 An apparatus for heat treating hardenable steel pipes (10) comprises a production line (11), along which a pipe is moveable in a first direction, an input station (12), an induction heater (13) and an outlet station (14). The process of hardening the pipe involves advancing the pipe into an induction heater (13). After the pipe has been moved through the induction heater it is quenched. Adjustment means comprising a lance mechanism enables a quench head and lance to be moved axially in a direction away from the heater (13) until the quench head is clear of the pipe.
