A heatable roller for calenders, smoothing machines or the like, includes heating channels with entry and discharge connection systems at each end thereof. Each entry and discharge connection system consists of at least two connection channels which lead from a common chamber and end in the heating channels with differing distances from the roller ends. The connection channels can be individually activated by a selection device having its own temperature control circuit. In this manner, the temperature of the heatable roller can be influenced with respect to the width of the material processed.
