Process for hot embossing a base sheet and/or for perforating and bonding multiple plies of a paper product together. The process can be used in order to apply a decorative pattern to a paper product and/or to bond multiple ply products together. In one embodiment, the process of the present invention includes feeding a previously formed single ply or multi-ply base sheet through a heated embossing nip. As the base sheet passes through the heated embossing nip, sufficient heat and pressure is imparted to cause the fibers within the sheet to begin to melt or glassinate. Upon cooling, inter-fiber bonding occurs resulting in a well-defined embossment as well as bonding between plies of a multi-ply product.

Cette invention a trait à un procédé permettant de gaufrer à chaud une feuille de base et/ou de perforer et de liaisonner plusieurs jets intermédiaires d'un article en papier. Il est possible d'utiliser ce procédé pour appliquer un motif décoratif sur un article en papier et/ou pour liaisonner des articles multi-jets. Dans un mode de réalisation, ce procédé consiste à faire passer une feuille déjà formée, à un seul ou à plusieurs jets, dans une pince de gaufrage. On chauffe la feuille de base et on la soumet à une certaine pression, suffisamment pour que les fibres qu'elle renferme commencent à fondre ou à se transformer en papier cristal. Après refroidissement, le liaisonnement se fait entre les fibres, ce qui permet d'obtenir un gaufrage bien délimité ainsi qu'un bon liaisonnement entre les jets de cet article multi-jets.
