HEATED HOLLOW ROLL ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hollow roll, especially for use as a smoothing roll, press roll, or drying cylinder in the manufacture of a web of material, such as paper, includes apparatus for the controlled heating of edge regions of the roll. The heating apparatus comprises an internal and/or an external heating device or devices. The internal heating device is disposed within the roll and is inset relative to a width of a web passing over the roll. The external heating device is disposed outside of the roll and in the vicinity of the edge regions thereof.
