A valve element (20) at the outlet of a vessel (10) containing a metal melt has a stator (22) securable in the outlet and a rotor (24) rotatably guided in it by means of a cylindrical sliding surface (27), whereby the stator (22) has a central longitudinal opening (25) and at least one transverse opening (26) starting from it at the top, whilst the rotor (24) has at least one opening corresponding to the latter, and the overlap of these transverse openings may be altered by rotation of the rotor (24) in order to open or close the valve element (20). The stator (22) constructed as the valve member has a refractory insert (23) which defines the cylindrical sliding surface (27) and the transverse opening (26). This refractory insert (23) also has a coaxial opening (25") which is in alignment with the longitudinal opening (25) in the stator (22) and merges at the top into the transverse opening (26). This stator (22) can thus be manufactured in an extremely simple manner.
