Abstract of the Disclosure A heavy duty pneumatic radial tire is disclosed, which comprises a tread divided into a plurality of island parts by at least two main grooves continuously extending in the circumferential direction of the tire. In this tire, the main groove consists of an outer groove portion opening at its both upper edges, each extending zigzag in the circumferential direction of the tire to an outer surface of the tread and an inner groove portion being inwardly adjacent to the outer groove portion in the radial direction of the tire and extending substantially in parallel to the circumferential direction of the tire together with both edges each defining a boundary to said outer groove portion, and a maximum groove half width of the outer groove portion at the outer surface of the tread is within a range of 1-7.5% with respect to the width of the tread and is larger than a maximum groove half width of the inner groove portion, and a groove depth of the inner groove portion is not less than 5% of that of the main groove.
