ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of reducing the viscosity of heavy oil to permit transportation of the heavy oil is disclosed. The viscosity of the heavy oil is reduced by contact with an aqueous solution including an alpha olefin sulfonate and an alkaline substance such as sodium hydroxide. The solution is effective in reducing viscosity of heavy oil when salts or divalent ions are present.
