An armrest height adjustment mechanism for an office chair is disclosed. The height adjustment mechanism includes a pivotally mounted pawl which can be moved in and out of engagement with a rotatable pinion. When the pinion is not engaged by the pawl, it may travel upwards or downwards over a toothed rack, thereby varying the height of the armrest. Once an appropriate armrest position is chosen the pawl is then moved back into engagement with the pinion thereby locking the armrest in place.
