ABSTRACT An armrest height adjustment mechanism for chairs is disclosed and includes a pair of open channel supports connected together to form a U-shaped armrest support secured to the bottom of a seat support. An arm cover extends over the vertically disposed portions of each of the two armrest supports and the armrests can slide vertically on the channel supports. An armrest is secured to the upper end of each arm cover. The height adjustment mechanism includes a ratchet track secured in the open channel so that the tracked portion is positioned adjacent the upper edge of the channel supports. A slider is located in the open channel and is secured to a slider plate which in turn is attached to the arm cover. An armrest lock includes a finger actuated latch pivotally mounted in the arm cover having a finger actuable portion extending through the side of the arm cover below the armrest. An arm is attached to the finger actuable portion and has a laterally extending tongue located at the end of the arm for engaging grooves located in the ratchet portion of the ratchet track. In a non-synchronous embodiment, the height adjustment mechanisms in each arm are decoupled and independently operable. In a synchronous version the mechanisms are coupled together by a strap coupled to a spring with the strap being secured to each of the sliders so that when one armrest is moved vertically, the other armrest moves synchronously therewith.
