The invention provides an improved method of applying herbicide to unwanted plants through the physical contact of herbicide with the surface of individual herbaceous plants without risk of accidental spillage of herbicide on adjacent plants. The device comprises tongs having a pair of connected arms with opposed contact plates at the ends to which are adhered on the inside surfaces of the plates a material containing a herbicide. Said material adhering to the plates at the ends of the tongs is either: .cndot. a soft and absorbent material that is capable of absorbing herbicide applied by the user and of expressing said herbicide when compressed, or .cndot. a mixture of wax and herbicide of a consistency and strength which permits its surface to be gradually eroded by physical contact. The contact plates at the ends of the tongs are placed on each side of part of the stem or foliage of unwanted plants and compressed by the user onto said plant, hence delivering herbicide to the unwanted plant.
