ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A shaft seal mechanism for a vertically installed hermetic type scroll compressor in which the interior of the housing is kept at discharge pressure is disclosed. The compressor in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention includes a drive shaft sup- ported by a plain bearing in an inner block member. The drive shaft is operatively linked to an orbiting scroll which orbits within a sta- tionary scroll. An isolated cavity is defined within the compressor housing by the stationary scroll and the inner block member. A spiral element of both the stationary and orbiting scrolls, a driving mecha- nism and a rotation preventing mechanism are disposed within the isolated cavity. The isolated cavity is divided into an upper and lower subcavities by an end plate of the orbiting scroll. A small aperture is axially formed through the end plate of the orbiting scroll to intro- duce the intermediately compressed refrigerant gas into the lower subcavity from an intermediately located fluid pocket defined by spi- ral elements. Mechanical seals are disposed within the lower isolated cavity and are mounted around the drive shaft, thereby preventing the discharged refrigerant gas from flowing from the inner chamber into the lower isolated subcavity. Therefore, the axially urging force which upwardly acts on the orbiting scroll due to the intermediate refrigerant gas pressure is maintained, thereby obtaining an appropri- ate axial seal of the fluid pockets of the scrolls. In a second embodi- ment, the isolated cavity is maintained at the suction pressure and is not divided into subcavities.
