A method of manufacturing herringbone gears starting with non-hardened cylindrical stock material, establishing a relief notch for each tooth in the cylindrical stock where the two helices meet, roughing the double helical teeth, and case-hardening the gear teeth. The teeth are then finished using high accuracy Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN)-faced cutters with the relief notch allowing run-out of the cutters.

L'invention a trait à un procédé de fabrication d'un engrenage à chevrons, qui consiste à fournir une matière première cylindrique non durcie, à ménager une encoche de détalonnage pour chaque dent dans la matière cylindrique, au niveau du point de rencontre des deux hélices, à dégrossir la denture hélicoïdale double, et à cémenter la denture de l'engrenage. La denture est ensuite achevée au moyen de couteaux revêtus de nitrure de bore cubique (NBC), l'encoche de détalonnage permettant le dépassement des couteaux.
