Heterohybridomas producing human monoclonal antibodies against a neutralizing epitope of HIV-1 are prepared by transforming peripheral blood lymphocytes by Epstein-Barr virus, selecting cells producing an antibody to a synthetic peptide representing part of the neutralizing epitope, and fusing them with a heteromyeloma cell. A method for producing a human monoclonal antibody specific for a neutralizing HIV-1 epitope from the heterohybridoma is disclosed, as are human monoclonal antibodies specific for particular peptide epitopes of the V3 loop of the gp120 glycoprotein of HIV.
