- 32 - ABSTRACT HIDDEN MARKOV MODEL SPEECH ANALYZER A speech recognizer includes a plurality of stored constrained hidden Markov model reference templates and a plurality of stored predetermined acoustic feature representative signals. An input utterance is analyzed to form a sequence of acoustic feature signals from which a sequence of said stored predetermined feature signals are selected to represent the input pattern. A signal representative of the probability of the speech pattern being each reference pattern is generated jointly responsive to the Markov model reference templates and the selected feature signal sequence. The input speech pattern is identified as one of the reference patterns responsive to the probability representative signals.
