A document assembly method for assembling static HTML/XML files from a template comprises the steps of coding an input HTML/XML template with a plurality of tags, storing in memory a plurality of modular text components, receiving an instruction from a user, reading the input HTML/XML template, collecting components hierarchically, transforming tagged strings, assembling a document hierarchically, replacing special characters, selecting visible portions, and writing the output HTML/XML document. The tagged text strings may be encapsulated in a pair of HTML/XML tags, encapsulated in a pair of special-character strings, or indicated by text colour, font or style. This invention relates to computing, and the principal use of the invention is for document assembly.
