A method of fairly and efficiently scheduling transmission of a packet from a plurality of sessions onto a network is presented. The method includes providing an input having a plurality of sessions, grouping the sessions into a plurality of classes, scheduling the classes with first level schedulers associated with one of the classes, scheduling the outputs of some of the first level schedulers with a second level scheduler, and prioritizing among the output of the remaining first level scheduler(s) and the output of the second level scheduler to provide an hierarchical scheduler output. The scheduler accepts traffic types at its input, and provides an output suitable for scheduling cell based traffic such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network traffic.
Procédé servant à programmer, de façon équitable et efficace, la transmission d'un paquet depuis une pluralité de sessions afin de l'acheminer sur un réseau. Ce procédé consiste à se baser sur une entrée possédant une pluralité de sessions, à regrouper ces sessions en une pluralité de catégories, à programmer les catégories avec des programmateurs de premier niveau associés à une des catégories, à programmer les sorties de quelques uns des programmateurs de premier niveau avec un programmateur de deuxième niveau et à établir une priorité entre la sortie du reste du ou des programmateurs de premier niveau et la sortie du programmateur de deuxième niveau afin de produire une sortie de programmateur hiérarchique. Ce programmateur accepte des types de trafic au niveau de son entrée et produit une sortie adéquate pour la programmation d'un trafic à base cellulaire, tel qu'un trafic sur un réseau fonctionnant en mode de transfert asynchrone (ATM).
