Abstract of the Disclosure A method is provided for hierarchical segmentation of range images. First, an initial partition of small planar regions using a robust fitting technique constrained by depth and orientation discontinuities is generated. From the initial partition, represented by an adjacency graph structure, regions are grouped into larger and larger regions until an approximation limit is reached. Bayesian decision theory is used to determine the local optimal grouping and the geometrical complexity of the approximation surface. A hierarchical structure is generated that can be used to represent objects with a varying level of detail by scanning through the hierarchical structure generated.
