Abstract of the disclosure A magnesium hydroxide having a BET specific surface area of 20 to 50 m2/g, a 50 percent diameter, as a secondary particle, of not more than 1.5 µm and a 90 percent diameter, as a secondary particle, of not more than 4.0 µm, and a process for the production of a magnesium hydroxide which comprises heating a basic magnesium chloride or nitrate represented by formula Mg(OH)2-xAx?mH2O wherein A represents Cl or NO3, x is in the range of 0<x<0.2, and m represents a number of from 0 to 6, and having main spacings of 8.2.ANG., 4.1.ANG., 2.7.ANG., 2ØANG., 1.56.ANG. and 1.54.ANG. measured by X-ray diffraction, in reaction mother liquor of the basic magnesium chloride or nitrate under atmospheric pressure or a pressure lower than atmospheric pressure at a temperature between about 50°C and about 120°C.
