A source/transmission fiber strategy results in a WDM system with negligible FWM penalty even for closely-spaced channels. The combined performance of a source (210) which provides chirped wavelength pulses with a precise synchronism, along with a transmission fiber (220) dispersion map (240, 250, 260) and a high speed optical modulator (230) avoids pulse overlap.
