HIGH CONTRAST THIN FILM OPTICAL RECORDING MEDIUM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A thin film recording medium for optically recording information in optically readable form. The DRAW recording medium of the present invention achieves high playback contrast with an unusually thin layer of a dielectric light-responsive material by taking advantage of multiple reflection paths to align the phase of the reflected light such that strongly destructive interference of reading light occurs at each area where the light-responsive layer has been removed by a writing beam of light. The invention provides a DRAW recording medium having sufficient contrast and background reflectivity to satisfy the International Electrotechnical Commission optical disc standard for videodiscs. A second embodiment of the DRAW recording medium of the present invention consists of a four layer structure: a transparent substrate; a uniform layer of a dielectric light-responsive material having a threshold energy level at which a physical change in the material occurs; a transparent spacer layer of inert material and a highly electrically conductive and highly reflective overcoating on the opposite side of the spacer layer from the substrate. Additionally, a recording method and system are disclosed which allow the concentration of the writing energy to a well defined volume within the thickness of the energy responsive layer or the uniform distribution of the energy throughout the layer by setting up a standing wave within the energy responsive layer by use of the electrically conductive reflecting layer.
