ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In the present invention, there is provided a high density alumina zirconia ceramic body the composition of which comprises greater than 60 mole % and less than 99 mole % .alpha.-alumina; greater than 1 mole % and less than 40 mole % zirconia containing more than 65% of tetragonal phase; and transition metal oxide(s); the atomic ratio of the transition metal(s) to the combination of aluminium and zirconium being from 0.01% to 1%. This ceramic body is very strong, very tough and very hard so that it can be used for mechanical members, abrasion resistant materials, cutting tools and the like. The ceramic body of the invention can be produced by sintering a combined powder prepared from a dispersion of a mixture comprising .alpha.-alumina powder or a precursor thereof, and zirconia powder or a precursor thereof in a solution or suspension of transition metal compound(s). Preferably, an alumina zirconia combination powder is used which is prepared by calcining a combined powder produced by mixing a dispersion of .alpha.-alumina powder and an aqueous solution of a zirconium salt with a precipitating agent.
