ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A high density, single pass heat exchanger is disclosed especially useful for drying fragmented moisture-bearing fibrous products such as bakery wastes, alfalfa, peat moss and wood products. A burner connected to the drum causes heated gases to be directed throughout the length of the heat exchanger for evaporation of water from the fragmented products while they are in the drum. A series of internal, circumferentially spaced, inwardly directed, product- conveying, showering conductive and convective heat transfer flights extend toward the center of the drum. The diameter of the drum (R) divided by the effective diameter (r) of the flight-free central zone is equal to an aspect ratio (R/r) of from about 2.4 to about 1.4. A sufficient number of the flights are provided and their dimensions are such that the total area of the heat conductive and convective flight surfaces is at least equal to the total heat transfer surfaces presented by the product to be dried when conveyed through the heat exchanger at the maximum rated throughput capacity of the latter.
