A high-dispersibility magnesium oxide having a BET specific surface area of 10 to 200 m2/g, a 50 percent diameter, as a secondary particle, of 0.1 to 1.5 µm, and a 90 percent diameter, as a secondary particle, of not more than 3.0 µm, and a process for the production of the above magnesium oxide which comprises firing a magnesium hydroxide having a BET specific surface area of 1 to 50 m2/g, a 50 percent diameter, as a secondary particle, of 0.1 to 1.5 µm, and a 90 percent diameter, as a secondary particle, of not more than 4.0 µm at a temperature of between 400°C and 1,200°C.The high-dispersibility magnesium oxide is useful as an acid acceptor for halogenated rubbers, a neutralizing or adsorbing agent for an acid generated from resins, a thickening agent for FRP or a raw material of ceramics.

Divulgation d'un oxyde de magnésium de haute dispersibilité, ayant une surface efficace spécifique (BET) de 10 à 200 m2/g, un diamètre 50 %, comme particule secondaire, de 0,1 à 1,5 µm, et un diamètre 90 %, comme particule secondaire, de moins de 3,0 µm. On divulgue aussi un procédé pour sa production, comprenant la cuisson, à une température comprise entre 400 et 1 200 .degré.C, d'hydroxyde de magnésium ayant une surface efficace spécifique (BET) de 1 à 50 m2/g, un diamètre 50 %, comme particule secondaire, de 0,1 à 1,5 µm, et un diamètre 90 %, comme particule secondaire, de moins de 4,0 µm. Cet oxyde de magnésium de haute dispersibilité est utile comme accepteur acide pour les caoutchoucs halogénés, comme agent pour neutraliser ou adsorber un acide produit par des résines, comme agent épaississant pour le plastique renforcé de fibres de verre, ou comme matière brute pour les céramiques.
