ABSTRACT Catalyst compositions exhibiting high activity in the polymerization of a-olefins are prepared (A) tetravalent or trivalent titanium components such as a titanium tetraalkoxide, (B) an anhydrous zinc compound such as diethyl zinc, (C) an organomagnesium component such as a hydrocarbon soluble complex of dialkyl magnesium and an alkyl aluminum, (D) a halide source such as a hydrogen halide or an alkyl aluminum halide and (E) an aluminum compound ? the halide source or organomagnesium compound does not contain sufficient quantities of aluminum. Polymeriza- tion processes employing this catalyst do not require subsequent catalyst removal steps and the resulting poly- mers have broader molecular weight distributions than do corresponding polymers prepared without the added anhy- drous zinc compound.
