A high gain, high output power, low noise optical amplifier is provided using passive and active optical waveguides and devices. The amplifier consists of one or more optical laser pump (s), optical gain module in the form of a four port Mach-Zehnder interferometer with two active waveguide arms, and means for controlling and monitoring the amplifier parameters. This configuration provides a both directional pumping while achieving twice as high gain and output power than any other optical fiber configuration with the same amount of pump energy with only half of the noise generated in the active media mixed with the amplified signal. Using the optical gain module provided in this invention, the optical signal first split into two branches and amplify by the active waveguide and recombine constructively and exit at the output port of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The power of the two split and amplified signals are added together constructively because of 100% phase correlation while half of the noise generated in the two active arms, having random phase relative to each other, filter out from the amplified signal based on the principle operation of Mach-Zehnder interferometers. This results in achieving an optical amplifier with ideally 3 dB higher gain, 3 dB higher output power, and 3 dB less noise figure than any other optical amplifier with the same amount of pump energy. The noise figure of an optical amplifier built based on the principle of present invention ideally approaches 0 dB.
