A composition and process for making it are disclosed which teach multimodal particle size high impact monovinylaromatic polymer material having good gloss properties as well as high impact strength. The bimodal particle size rubber component of the material utilizes a small amount of a very large particle size rubber and a large amount of a very small particle size rubber. The unique and advantageous method of manufacturing the material involves introducing pre-existing pellets of a rubber/polymer blend into a monomer solution also containing a rubber capable of producing particles of a different range of sizes than that of the rubber component in the pellets, and polymerizing the monomer/dissolved pellet mixture into a multimodal particle size high impact material.
Substance et processus permettant de produire un matériau très résistant à l'impact composé de polymère monovinylique aromatique à distribution granulométrique multimodale. Le composant de caoutchouc à distribution granulométrique multimodale est constitué d'une petite quantité de particules de caoutchouc de très grande dimension et d'une grande quantité de particules de caoutchouc de petite dimension. Ce procédé unique et avantageux consiste à introduire des pastilles préfabriquées composées d'un mélange de caoutchouc et de polymère dans une solution monomère contenant également un caoutchouc pouvant produire des particules de tailles différentes de celles du composant caoutchouc des pastilles. Le mélange de pastilles monomère dissous est ensuite polymérisé pour obtenir un matériau à distribution granulométrique multimodale résistant à l'impact.
