Abstract of the Disclosure A high intensity discharge lamp having an inner tube in which a discharge takes place upon the application of voltage thereto to produce visible light and ultraviolet radiation and an outer envelope which blocks harmful ultraviolet radiation. An element connected in the voltage supply to the inner tube is provided to extinguish the discharge when the outer envelope is broken, said element being either a resistively heated oxidizable element which oxidizes to a point of breakage in the presence of air when the outer envelope is broken to remove the voltage to the arc tube or a mechanical switch having a portion which is responsive to the breakage of the outer envelope and opens to remove the arc tube voltage. * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
