ABSTRACT A releasably lockable automotive seat back hinge linkage device includes a hingedly interconnected seat back support arm and a seat cushion side plate, which are arranged to be relatively rotatably positionable in an at least one mutually releasably locked position, about a first common pivot. A pivotable locking pawl is arranged to rotate relative to the seat cushion side plate about a second pivot in common therewith. The locking pawl includes a locking surface adapted to pivotally engage a complimentary pawl engaging surface portion of the seat back support arm, in forced transferring relation along a first line of action. A cam is included which is selectively rotatable relative to the seat cushion side plate about a third pivot in common therewith. The cam includes a cam surface operable for selectively engaging a cam follower surface of the locking pawl in forced relation along a second line of action. The first and second lines of action are offset from one another. The cam surface is operable to rotationally bias the pawl locking surface into pivotal engagement with the complimentary pawl engaging surface portion, and operably secure the seat back support arm and seat cushion side plate in mutually releasably locked position. Forces that are transferred through respective ones of the offset lines of action combine in a vector sum to rigidly take up the first, second and third degrees of lost motion through the pivotal inter-engagement of the pawl locking surface and complimentary pawl engaging surface portion of the seat back support arm, whereby first, second and third degrees of lost motion associated with the linkage as a result of mechanical clearances in respect of ones of the first, second and third pivots, are taken up, to thereby reduce chuck in the linkage as a whole.
