A bed comprises a main frame. A pivot plate may be provided for supporting for pivotal movement an actuator rod for raising and lowering the main frame relative to a supporting surface. The pivot plate is supported for rotation relative to the main frame via a first pivot point. The pivot plate is further supported for rotation in a plane substantially parallel to the main frame. A leg may comprise at least one leg member and at least one link, and a stabilizer connecting the leg member to the main frame. At least portions of the main frame, the leg, the link, and the stabilizer form a four bar system for raising and lowering the bed.
