ABSTRACT FOR THE DISCLOSURE A process is provided for the manufacture of polyether sulfone polymers by reacting a 3,3'-5,5'-tetraalkyl-4,4'- dihydroxybiphenyl with 4,4'-dihalodiphenyl sulfone and from 0-30 percent stoichiometric excess of an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate compound in the presence of a dipolar aprotic solvent. The products have low density and high glass transi- tion temperatures and are useful in the manufacture of films, sheets and molded parts.
