High molecular weight, water-soluble prodrugs of formula (I), wherein: D is a biologically active moiety; M is X or Q; X is an electron withdrawing group; Q is a moiety containing a free electron pair positioned five or six atoms from Y'; Y and Y' are oxygen or sulfur; and R is a polyalkylene oxide, are disclosed. Methods of preparing the compounds as well as methods of treatment using the compounds are also disclosed.

Promédicaments solubles dans l'eau, ayant un poids moléculaire élevé, de formule (I) dans laquelle D est une fraction biologiquement active; M représente X ou Q; X est un groupe de retrait d'électrons; Q est une fraction contenant une paire d'électrons libres positionnée à 5 ou 6 atomes par rapport à Y'; Y et Y' représentent oxygène ou soufre; et R est un oxyde de polyalkylène.
