A high performance distributed discovery system for the discovery of the network topology of devices of a high speed data network comprising a plurality of discovery engines on at least one and preferably a plurality of data collection node computers for the polling and registration of discovered objects into a distributed topology database whereby parallel processing is provided. The topology database is periodically pulled down to at least one performance monitoring server computer to provide for network management.
