A barrel (10) has an inner tube (12) with cartridge chamber (28) at one end and a muzzle (16) at the other. An outer tube (56) is secured to and surrounds said inner tube to form a propellant chamber (60) therewith. The barrel guides projectiles such as bullets (32) as they arc accelerated by a propellant. The inner tube has a wall with an aperture (62) formed merein and spaced inwardly from said muzzle. Propellant gasses pass through the aperture into said propellant chamber. A pluraliy of ribs (52) also extend between the inner and outer tubes. A coolant may also be injected into the propellant chamber to escape through the muzzle with the propellant after the projectile exits the muzzle.
