A water based drilling fluid for use in drilling a subterranean well through a subterranean formation that swells in the presence of water, the drilling fluid is formulated to include: an aqueous based continuous phase; a weight material; an optional shale hydration inhibition agent and a shale encapsulator. The shale encapsulator is preferably a quaternized polyvinyl alcohol having the formula (I) in which x and y have a value so that the molecular weight of the cation is in the range of about 10,000 to about 200,000 AMU; A is selected from C1-C6 alkyl, C2-C6 ether or C2-C6 amide; R, R' and R" are independently selectable C1-C3 alkyl; and B is a charge balancing anion to the quarternary amine. The shale hydration inhibition agent and the shale encapsulator may be present in sufficient concentrations to reduce the swelling of the subterranean formation in the presence of water. Conventional additives may be included into the formulation of the drilling fluid, such conventional additives may include: fluid loss control agents, alkaline reserve and other pH control agents, bridging agents, lubricants, anti-bit balling agents, corrosion inhibition agents, surfactants and solids suspending agents as well as mixtures and combination of these and similar compounds that should be known to one of skill in the art.

L'invention porte sur un fluide de forage hydraulique pour puits foré dans des formations souterraines gonflant en présence d'eau. Ledit fluide comporte: une base aqueuse en phase continue; une charge pondéreuse; un inhibiteur d'hydratation des schistes facultatif; et un encapsuleur de schistes de préférence du type alcool de polyvinyle quaternisé de formule (I) dans laquelle: x et y présentent une valeur telle que le poids moléculaire du cation est compris entre environ 10 000 et environ 200 000 AMU; A est choisi parmi C¿1?-C¿6? alkyle, C¿2?-C¿6? éther ou C¿2?-C¿6? amide; R, R' et R" sont C¿1?-C¿3? alkyle choisissables indépendamment; et B est un anion équilibrant la charge de l'amine quaternaire. L'inhibiteur d'hydratation et l'encapsuleur de schistes peuvent être présents en concentration suffisante pour réduire le gonflement de la formation souterraine en présence d'eau. On peut ajouter à la formule du fluide de forage les additifs usuels suivants: suppresseurs de fuites, réserve alcaline et autre régulateurs du pH, agents de pontage, agents anti-bourrage du trépan, inhibiteurs de corrosion, tensio-actifs, et agents solides en suspension, ou leurs mélanges et combinaisons, ainsi que tout composé similaire connus de la profession.
