A B S T R A C T A high pressure plunger pump is provided. The pump has a centrally arranged pressure valve and a sleeve like element mounted slidably between the cylinder and the plunger, subjected to spring pressure and enclosing the pump pressure chamber. The sleeve like element is carried exclusively by the plunger and stop means are provided for limiting sliding movement of the sleeve like element towards a rearward end of the cylinder, away from the pressure valve. Multiple cylinder embodiments are also disclosed.
