An excavation technique involves producing a high pressure jet of water having the pressure greater than 2000 psi so that the jet is communicated through a wand to a nozzle which causes the jet to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the nozzle. A vacuum duct can be moved to a position adjacent the nozzle and generates a very high airflow of at least 2000 cfm at a vacuum greater than 10 inches mercury. These parameters combine to provide an efficient and economic excavation system by which the soil impacted by the jet is broken into soil pieces and particles which are drawn away in relatively dry form for storage within an extraction tank.
