2071477 9203493 PCTABS00011 A high purety aromatic polyester consisting essentially of repeating interpolymerized units derived from 1,1-bis(4hydroxyphenyl)-1-phenylethane and 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene and isophthalic acid choride and/or terephthalic acid chloride, which polyster contains less than 4 % by weight of low molecular weight species of a molecular weight less than 8000 and forms films having an elongation at break of at least 50. These polyesters are prepared by a novel interfacial polymerization process whereby the ratio of the low molecular weight species is further reduced during the precipitation of the polymer using e.g. MEK or acetone as precipitant. The polyesters have excellent tensile strength and elongation, chemical resistance, moisture resistance, temperature resistance, electrical properties such as high volume resistivity, high surface resistivity, high tracking and arc resistance, high dielectric constant, high dielectric strength and low dissipation factor. The polyester can advantageously be used as a film or as a layer deposited onto a substrate. It can be e.g. used as electrical insulator, as dielectric medium especially in a film wound capacitor and as optical medium in optical fibers.
