A passively mode-locked solid-state laser is designed to emit a continuous- wave train of electromagnetic-radiation pulses, the fundamental repetition rate of the emitted pulses exceeding 1 GHz, without Q-switching. The laser comprises an optical resonator (3.1), a solid-state laser gain element (2) placed inside said optical resonator, means (1) for exciting said laser gain element to emit electromagnetic radiation characterized by the effective wavelength, and means for passive mode-locking comprising a saturable absorber. The laser gain element (2) preferably consists of a laser material with a stimulated emission cross section exceeding 0.8x10-18 cm-2 at the effective wavelength; typically, the laser gain element is made of Nd:vanadate. The saturable absorber is preferably a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror device (4). The laser is simple, robust, compact, efficient, and low-cost. It generates a relatively large average power of 100 mW and higher (51, 52), which is useful for a number of optical probing and detection applications, in a beam which is substantially a fundamental spatial mode.

L'invention concerne un laser à l'état solide à modes passivement bloqués destiné à émettre un train d'oscillations continues d'impulsions à rayonnement électromagnétique, la vitesse de répétition fondamentale des impulsions émises dépassant 1 GHz, sans impulsion géante. Le laser est composé d'un résonateur optique (3.1), d'un élément (2) de gain de laser à l'état solide placé dans ce résonateur optique, de moyens (1) permettant d'exciter l'élément de gain de laser de manière à émettre un rayonnement électromagnétique caractérisé par la longueur d'onde efficace et de moyens permettant le blocage passif de phases comprenant un absorbeur saturable. L'élément (2) de gain de laser se compose de préférence d'un matériau laser dont une section transversale d'émission simulée dépasse 0,8x10?-18¿ cm?-2¿ au niveau de la longueur d'onde efficace et est normalement formée de Nd :vanadate. L'absorbeur saturable est de préférence un dispositif miroir (4) absorbeur saturable à semi-conducteur. Le laser est simple, robuste, compact, efficace et bon marché. Il génère une puissance moyenne relativement importante de 100 mW et plus (51, 52) utile pour un certain nombre d'applications de détection optique, dans un faisceau qui est un mode fondamentalement spatial.
