An X-ray imaging system uses a linear X-ray detector based on Microstrip Gas Counter (MSGC) principles, and provides colour X-ray images which incorporate information about the energy of the incident X-rays, and which are able to provide a spatial resolution finer than the spacing of the detector elements by using centroid calculations of the response to individual photon interactions with the gas. The system may be used in a wide variety of applications including digital radiography, computed tomography, food inspection and grading, printed circuit board assembly inspection, wood processing, baggage inspection, and security systems.
