ABSTRACT The specification describes an ultrasonic scanner for scanning an object comprising a body portion, a plurality of ultrasonic transducers each having a predetermined focal range, the focal ranges being contiguous, each of the transducers when energized producing a beam of acoustic energy having a beam axis, means for mounting the transducers on the body portion, means for moving the body portion so that the object is scanned by the transducers and means for connecting the transducers to a transmitter/receiver and for energizing the transducers so that the transducers scan a given sector, the sector being divided into contiguous zones with the depth of each zone of the given sector corresponding to the focal range of one of the transducers.
