ABSTRACT The invention is concerned with a process and an apparatus for absorbing a gaseous substance by transferring mass therefrom into a liquid solvent capable of dissolving this gaseous substance. The solvent is pumped and the gaseous substance compressed, and the so pumped solvent and compressed gaseous substance are mixed together to produce a gaseous/liquid mixture. A nozzle produces a jet of this gaseous/liquid mixture into a hollow vessel, which nozzle is structured to impart to the gaseous/liquid mixture a high shear causing (a) a high turbulence in the jet of gaseous/liquid mixture, and (b) spraying of the liquid solvent into fine droplets whereby a high interfacial area between the gaseous substance and the liquid solvent is obtained. The high turbulence and interfacial area increase the rate of mass transfer from the gaseous substance into the liquid solvent.
