A description is given of an aqueous polymer dispersion derived from at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and with a solids content of at least 60% by weight, based on the polymer dispersion. The polymer dispersion comprises at least one salt of a phosphorus acid. The preparation takes place by free-radical emulsion polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in aqueous phase in the presence of at least one emulsifier, at least one initiator and at least one salt of a phosphorus acid. With the process it is possible to prepare aqueous polymer dispersions having a high solids content in combination with a low viscosity, these polymer dispersions being suitable for formulating adhesives.
