ABSTRACT A method for preparing a high solids, low viscosity stable aqueous vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer emulsion the copolymer containing a water soluble comonomer. Vinyl acetate and ethylene monomers are added to an aqueous solution containing a stabilizing system consisting essentially of 2-4 wt% low molecular weight polyvinyl alcohol of 100 to 600 degree of polymerization and 1-4 wt% of a nonionic surfactant which is a C7-C18 alkyl phenoxy poly(ethyleneoxy) ethanol containing 30-40 ethylene oxide units. The relative amount of vinyl acetate and ethylene to water charged to the reaction vessel is such that a water-in-monomer emulsion is initially formed.
