A method of creating a droplet from a jet of a flow cytometer comprises the steps of establishing a nozzle volume; introducing a flow of sheath fluid into the nozzle volume; introducing a flow of a substance within the sheath fluid in the nozzle volume; initiating an oscillation within the nozzle volume; allowing the sheath fluid to exit from the nozzle volume; and forming at least one droplet from the sheath fluid after allowing the sheath fluid to exit from the nozzle volume.
